When you're a parent facing cancer, the finances start to be strained by medical bills, transportation and other things. Our Foundation always says yes where we can for the Foundation kids.
Family #1
Both parents have already beaten cancer. This couple met when the husband was out celebrating after he had won his battle. The wife had already beaten Brain Cancer, but it came back. When I first met this family, it was the week of her birthday. She told me that three weeks earlier she didn’t think she was going to be alive on her birthday. She went to California for surgery and it seems to have had the proper result of helping her beat her cancer for a second time.
This couple has 3 children, one is in the first grade at a school in Adams County and they have twins that are now 2 years old. Thanks to the surgery, these kids will have a chance to know their mother as they grow up. The Foundation stepped in to pay an administrative fee at the 1st grader’s school and has offered a therapist as well.

Family #2
A single mother battling lung cancer. She has two children currently in school and we are working with a therapist to help the children understand the cancer diagnosis and to know that there is someone outside of the family that is going to care for them while their mother continues her fight. Their mother has been in and out of the hospital since we started working with this family, but her latest scans have shown some progress in her fight and we remain hopeful that she will beat her cancer.
Family #3
A single mother battling breast cancer. She has two children but one is already out of college and hasn’t been around much for the family so we are focusing on the second child that is in high school. This child is having a very difficult time dealing with the mother’s diagnosis, and so we have put a therapist into the situation and they are currently doing some great work helping this child. The child still has good and bad days, but the therapist is there whenever needed and that is providing some of the stability that the child needs. The mother recently underwent a double mastectomy and was pronounced cancer free after the completion of the surgery. We will continue to work with this family to help the child with therapy and hopefully with education as well.
Family #4
A divorced mother of three battling breast cancer. One child is already in college and outside of the realm of the DKMCF, however there are still two children in high school. Both high school children play hockey and due to the arrangement with the father, one of the children might have missed out on playing hockey this season for the high school team. But the Foundation stepped in and took care of this fee for the family as well as a couple of other administrative fees and also has assigned a therapist to work with them as needed. Both children are doing well in school and their mother is living with stage 4 breast cancer; both students will continue to be covered by the Foundation for the duration of their high school years and will be able to benefit from other services that are being added to the program as we grow. Some services include a life coach that will be available to meet with them on a weekly basis.
Family #5
2 Elementary school teachers where the mother is fighting breast cancer. This family is located in Fort Collins and has two children both in elementary school. The mother has been trying to work though her cancer, but it has been difficult. The family was struggling to pay one child’s kindergarten admin fee, and the DKMCF stepped in and took care of this for the family. We have also assigned a therapist to work with the children and the family as needed and they are making great progress. The mother had surgery just before Thanksgiving 2013 and it appears to be working and she is doing well in her battle against her cancer.
Family #6
A single mother with two children fighting breast cancer. One child is in high school and has special needs and the other child is in middle school. We provided a therapist for this family as the high school child was really struggling to deal with mother’s diagnosis. As they continue on in the program, we will also be helping out with the education as both children are active in school and would like to be able to remain so.
Family #7
A single mother with one child fighting breast cancer. The one child is just starting kindergarten and really struggling to deal with mom’s diagnosis. We are providing a therapist and will look into the education side as we continue to work with this family. The mother had just spent some time in the hospital when we started to work with them, so we are hoping that she continues to improve and will be there as best as we can during her fight.
We are currenlty helping 20 families and have expanded into Arizona now. With your help we can continue to help families in need.
